Yet he started out wanting to be a Jazz musician. Until, at the age of 17, Iommi lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his right hand in an industrial accident on his last day of work in a sheet metal factory. Iommi described how he &#8220;was told &#8216;you&#8217;ll never play again&#8217;. \u00a0It was just unbelievable. \u00a0I sat in the hospital with my hand in this bag and I thought, that&#8217;s it \u2013 I&#8217;m finished.&#8221; He wasn&#8217;t, and he went on to become a seminal figure in world rock. &#8220;Even to this day it\u2019s still a problem,&#8221; admits Iommi, &#8220;I had to try and come up with a heavier sort of sound for the Sabbath thing, because there\u2019s certain things I couldn\u2019t play. \u00a0So I play a lot in E and let the open E string ring out. Eventually, I got a way of playing that suited me.\u201d\u00a0 He certainly did, so much so that Jeff Kitts and Brad Tolinski of Guitar World say that &#8220;grunge, goth, thrash, industrial, death, doom&#8230; whatever.
