Regarded now as the wise and kind father of Country music, Johnny Cash started out as the kind of wild hotel destroying hell-raiser that we associate with the excesses of the 1970’s. The 1950’s saw Cash adrift in a sea of drugs and alcohol. He was barred from major hotel chains after releasing hundreds of baby chicks on every floor of the hotel his band was staying at. Cash was arrested seven times from 1959 to 1968 for public drunkenness, reckless driving, and drug possession. Missed performances, divorce, alcohol abuse, and an addiction to amphetamines and barbiturates saw Cash hit rock bottom in the late 60’s. He is said to have sought to end it all and high on drugs and liquor crawled into a cave to die Instead of death Cash experienced some form of enlightenment – he walked out and sought help to beat his addictions from fellow musicians The Carter Family. He found God and salvation with a new wife in the form of June Carter – the love of his life – as well as the writer of his best known hit ‘Ring of Fire’. Cash was ordained as a minister in the early 1980’s yet declared he was “the biggest sinner of them all. I’ve lived my life for the devil up until now and from here on, I’m going to live it for the Lord.”
