James Hetfield wowing the crowd at RFK stadium during Van Halen’s Monsters of Rock tour in 1988. Monsters of Rock was designed to promote the new Van Halen featuring Sammy Hagar as frontman. It was a 23 city tour and new boys Metallica were put low down on a bill that ran down like this: Van Halen, The Scorpions, Dokken, Metallica, and Kingdom Come. It was Metallica that caused a stir with more and more young fans turning up early at shows especially to see them. Monsters of Rock was headlined by Van Halen but the show was stolen by Metallica. At the Los Angeles Coliseum fans rioted when Metallica finished their 60 minute set – they wanted more and left the stands and stormed towards the stage to protest. Van Halen’s Monsters of Rock 1988 became the tour where Metallica planted their own flag among the giants of rock music.
