Richard Starkey was an established drummer on the Merseybeat scene. He got his break when the band did their first recording session with George Martin at Abbey Road studios. Martin told them they needed a better drummer if they were serious about making it. They were serious, so they sacked Pete Best and hired Ringo. Ringo failed to impress Martin at first as well, only being allowed to play tambourine on his first sessions.
