Susan Janet Ballion is better know as Siouxsie and regarded as the ‘Queen of Goth’ though she resents her title. Speaking to the Guardian in 2005 she said: “I hate all that. I really resent people sticking labels on you”. Siouxsie made a splash on the London club scene with her sense of fashion and style. She pioneered the bondage look that would come to dominate punk rock and her cat eye make-up would become a hallmark. She was one of the ‘Bromley Contingent’ as the early followers of the Sex Pistols were called. She appeared on the infamous Bill Grundy TV interview with the Pistols that saw the end of Grundy’s career as a TV presenter and catapulted the Sex Pistols into the public mind. She formed Siouxsie and the Banshees with friend Steven Severin in 1976, taking the punk ethos of ‘anyone can do it’ to heart. During their career, Siouxsie and the Banshees released 11 studio albums and 30 singles. Their influence was vast with artists as diverse as Joy Division, U2, Radiohead, The Cure, The Smiths, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Massive Attack citing them as major influences.
